Mothman Statue, Museum, and Trading Co.

The Cryptid Known as Mothman

I like weird things. Mothman is a supernatural, entity, with some backstory from the 60s or maybe not. I am not a Mothman scholar, but I know he's a creature of mystery with a whole museum dedicated to him. I've heard about the Mothman festival that happens in September and have friends who have stopped in Point Pleasant as well. My desire to see this place was simply out of curiosity and wonder, which happens often with me.

The statue was metallic and in the middle of wide street in a small downtown area. Brick buildings up and down the way. I took some photos with the statue. but didn't check out his butt, which was an apparent mistake on my part. I noticed a historic scene painted on the walls between me and the Ohio River. I was in West Virginia but could look over to Ohio from where I stood. There weren't really any other people walking around when I was here. I snapped some photos of the river and the bridges that appeared on either side of where I stood. After a moment of enjoying the scenery, I turned back around to head in the museum itself.

I entered into a gift shop, and was filled with excitement. I imagined the souvenirs here would be cool and interesting to say the least. I held off on my urges and walked up to the counter where an older gentleman was standing behind a counter. I paid the man and walked into a room filled with Mothman memorabilia and historic items. It was mostly related to the events of the 1960s silver bridge collapse. I was a little foggy minded, as I am now, which is from having an abnormal sleep the night before. I took photos of some of the items. I remember the first thing I saw, was a tiny black car, made to look like...something I imagined was in the movie, but couldn't give you an exact explanation of what it was. Everything felt quite old, like it belonged in a museum. Which yes, the Mothman is quite old in some ways. Time is a strange thing, you can't physically be in a different time, so you can only imagine the distance between now and then. I'm not good at that, I'm either here or there, not here and there, that's impossible. Anyway, I looked at all the art, the costumes, the comics, they even had a room setup with a documentary playing if you wanted to chill out there for a while. I had plans to get pretty far today so I didn't take all the time in the world here, but I wasn't rushing either. There wasn't a ton to see, maybe 3 rooms including the movie room, but I had no expectations for size. I just wanted to enjoy the experience of Mothman.

Back in the gift shop I found myself looking at all the shirts, magnets, hats, comics, artwork, and such. I wanted to get some gifts for everyone or at least some people. My mother has magnets of places she and others have been on the fridge at home, so I planned to get her at least, a magnet. My sister, Stacey, has shotglasses, so I had thought to get her one of those. I saw a license plate that said MOTHMAN and thought of my dad, who has real license plates, but still, I thought it would be cool. I was interested in getting a Mothman for President piece of merchandise because I thought it was funny and it was President's Day when I was there. I ended up with a sticker that said Mothman for President, which I put on my car. I also got a sticker for my sister, Stacey, because she has a snowboard that she and Doug put stickers on to one day hang up on the wall. I found some comic books and got 3 different ones. One for myself, one for Alex and one for Doug. I found out later that the one for Doug was sort of rare, so that was perfect for him, and the one for Alex looked like a variant of The Fly, which was perfect for him, and mine involved aliens, which was what I wanted. There was a nice artwork done in an old movie poster style that I got for Rebecca. It is really cool and like it for myself, but it's not available online for me to get another one. I did, however, get a shirt with a similar, old movie poster style design, for myself.

This was my first stop, and it was exactly as I'd expected. I enjoyed myself. Next door was another shop that had more cryptid merchandise. I perused the things for a while but didn't end up buying anything here. It was still a neat place and a lot of the stuff is available online. That was kind of a deciding factor for a lot of things. This new age era cuts out a lot of the rarity behind specific loots from faraway destinations. Anyway, I remember that I wanted to leave so I could make it to either an aquarium or a zoo. They were both open later because it was holiday. I chose not to go to the aquarium because the parking seemed more confusing, and the zoo was closer to a mall I found while looking near Minneapolis.
